Electrocatalysis: Fundamental of electrode-electrolyte interface

The interface between an electrode and its surrounding solution environment has always been a mystery to researchers, as it generates new properties that lead to the formation of an electrical double layer. The typical thickness of a double layer is about 10-9 meters, so if we apply a potential of 1 volt to the system, the effective potential at the interface would be about 10^9 volts per meter!!! This is a huge potential. Therefore, the double layer at the interface plays an important role in any electrochemical system. This motivated me to work in this field to answer many unanswered questions about the impact of the double layer or electrochemical interface on electrocatalysis.
